Levity Farms is a first-generation family farm in beautiful Union County, Georgia. Since 2017, we have worked with local chefs to provide fresh, organically-grown, nutrient-dense produce to local folks in and around Atlanta and our new home in Blairsville. We have been setting up a table at our local farmers markets since we launched in 2017. Now that we’re settled in our North Georgia mountain farm, you can find us almost every Saturday, June through October, at the Union County Farmers Market.

Our main focus is on the health of the soil. Soil health is the greatest indicator of the overall health of a farm. Our efforts to build and maintain healthy soil are inspired and informed by our background in Permaculture, as well as our years of farming experience. We are striving toward a regenerative, closed-circuit operation, which will include ecologically-beneficial installations and growing practices to continually improve the conditions of the land on which we are growing, and which will also serve as a space for the community to gather and learn about, contribute to, and celebrate the nurturing of a healthy ecosystem.

Folks often ask us about our practices, including whether or not we spray our fields with any fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and the like. Frankly, we have never known how to grow food utilizing synthetic chemical sprays! Here’s the list of the field applications we use:

1. Mikrobs - Mikrobs is an OMRI-listed organic microbial superpack that contains zero chemicals. A single 8 oz. Mikrobs pouch contains over 100 billion microbes, each contributing to boost the growth of plants and their roots in healthy, effective ways, while simultaneously supporting the sustainability of the soil in which the plants are grown in.

2. Fish fertilizer - Hydrolyzed Fish 2 - 4 - 1: Neptune’s Harvest Fish Hydrolysate is the perfect fertilizer for organic gardening. Our unique cold process protects heat sensitive nutrients naturally found in fish, providing you with the best fertilizer available! We believe in making the highest quality fish hydrolysate, which is why our liquid fish uses a variety of dock-fresh North Atlantic fish. Unlike fish emulsions, Neptune’s Harvest doesn’t remove the proteins or oils during processing and has no unpleasant odor. Neptune's Harvest Fish Fertilizer is OMRI Listed for organic use.

3. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) - Bt is a bacterium that is found naturally in soils throughout the world. To reproduce, Bt makes spores that grow into new bacteria. Bt spores have proteins that are toxic to insect larvae when eaten. Because Bt comes from a natural source, it is called a biopesticide. In general, biopesticides tend to pose fewer risks than typical human-made pesticides.

As stewards of the earth, our job is to nurture the soil and strengthen the ecosystem of our farm, allowing us to plant our seeds in fertile land. Rather than “growers”, we often refer to ourselves as “soil farmers”. We understand that vibrant produce and healthy plants can only thrive when the conditions of the soil around them foster a strong, balanced food web.

We maintain a diverse repertoire of vegetables, herbs, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Georgia is located such that we are blessed with really ideal growing conditions for many delicious crops. Though much of our produce is often deemed season-specific, we utilize season-extension equipment and implement various irrigation techniques, which allow us to grow crops like lettuce, root vegetables, and brassicas almost all year long.
